Keysspill.com has been in contact with the US Coast Guard and was informed that the boat captains and crew must have the OSHA 24 Hour Hazwoper course to work on or around the oil spill. The 24 hour course is for the Boat Captains, crew and volunteers. If you want to take the training for employment, please take the 40 hour course on this page. There are many jobs with higher exposure levels that may require the 40 hour training, rather than the 24 hour course. If you are applying for oil spill cleanup jobs, we recommend the higher level of training. Most employers hiring Gulf oil spill cleanup workers are now requiring the 40 hour Hazwoper training for all workers. To receive the discounted price, follow these instructions!
Note: Trainees must have additional hands-on training in the donning, doffing, and use of the Personal Protective Equipment required for their job site(s) in accordance with 29 CFR 1910.120. It is the responsibility of the employer to certify that their employees have received this training. What is Hazwoper?Hazwoper is the OSHA acronym for "Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response Standard". Activities related to stopping the oil spill or containing the spilled oil fall under the "emergency response" activities under OSHA's Hazwoper standard, 29 CFR 1910.120 and 1926.65. Cleaning up the shoreline is considered "post-emergency cleanup operations and has specific requirements, but still requires 24 hour or 40 hour Hazwoper training depending on whether the Permissible Exposure Levels are exceeded. The Gulf Oil Spill is currently being treated with chemical dispersants like COREXIT and you must be aware of proper procedures in dealing with it. Learning Outcomes - Hazwoper 40 Hour
