What is Hazwoper?Hazwoper is the OSHA acronym for "Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response Standard". Activities related to stopping the oil spill or containing the spilled oil fall under the "emergency response" activities under OSHA's Hazwoper standard, 29 CFR 1910.120 and 1926.65. Cleaning up the shoreline is considered "post-emergency cleanup operations" and has specific requirements, but still requires 24 hour or 40 hour Hazwoper training depending on whether the Permissible Exposure Levels are exceeded. The Gulf Oil Spill is currently being treated with chemical dispersants like COREXIT and you must be aware of proper procedures in dealing with it.
